Lifestyle Habits to Adopt for Trauma Resilience

Trauma Healing 05

Resilience is the ability to adapt to life’s challenges and bounce back from trauma and adversity. By becoming resilient, we can empower ourselves to thrive in the face of life’s demands and to develop a sense of independence, purpose and self-worth in life. With a stronger sense of self, we’re less impacted by external factors, and by building resilience, we’re better able to turn negative experiences into opportunities for growth and learning.

Becoming resilient takes time and life experience, however, there are several lifestyle habits that we can adopt that will make us stronger during times of trials and tribulations, highlighted by the mentors at Kamalaya Connect.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with a good diet, sufficient sleep, regular exercise and optimumhydration is essential for strengthening the body and building a strong foundation for resilience and emotional wellbeing.

Exercise is potentially the most powerful single action we can take daily, even in small quantities, since studies have compared therapy, medication and exercise as treatments for depression, and exercise was often shown to be the most effective form of treatment. Exercise releases endorphins and chemicals to make us feel good, and when we feel good, we’re able to handle bad times better.

Nutrition and gut health also play a pivotal role in both our physical and mental health and by ensuring that our body is nourished, we’re more resilient to adverse times when our diet and daily schedules may be interrupted.

Spending time in nature in forests and parks can significantly enhance resilience. Nature provides a calming environment that can reduce stress and improve overall wellbeing while trees have been proven to release feel-good chemicals that help boost our mindset during tough times.

Finding time to reflect through meditation and journaling is also crucial. While we can’t change circumstances beyond our control, we can change how we respond to difficult situations by being proactive and breaking problems down into manageable pieces.

Experiencing tough times often reveals that we’re stronger than we think and gives us practice at turning setbacks into opportunities, whilst learning new life skills. Struggling with challenges and overcoming obstacles offers opportunities for self-discovery and growth and helps us to build and maintain a healthy perspective, helping us to respond to stressful situations with a more balanced, realistic thinking pattern.
