Eating for Optimal Female Health

Women Health

It’s a well-known fact that women experience countless hormonal changes throughout each stage of their lives. However, what’s less well-known is the impact that food can have on our hormonal health.

Certain foods can help to support hormonal balance so it’s essential that women incorporate nutrient-dense ingredients into their diet to support their overall health and wellbeing.

The wellness experts from Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary have highlighted some of the foods that women should eat to promote optimal wellbeing and hormonal balance. These include:

Cruciferous vegetables
Foods like broccoli, cauliflower, kale, bok choi and cabbage are packed with vitamin C andthey contain anti-cancer properties. They also help to lower cholesterol as we get older and have proven to support hormonal balance. Try incorporating these into your meals and in smoothies to maximise your daily dose of these healthy power foods.

Almonds
Almonds are especially beneficial for promoting optimal female health. They contain lots of prebiotics which are helpful bacteria that promote healthy digestion, ease stomach problems like irritable bowel disorders and help to build a strong immune system whilst boostingcalcium absorption. They can be easily snacked on or added to desserts and salads to ensure that you’re eating enough.

Eggs
Eggs have a positive impact on the production of insulin, which controls blood sugar and ghrelin, controlling appetite and can help to manage weight. They provide innumerable hormone-balancing benefits, as well as endless others and can be easily incorporated into our diet for breakfast, in salads or in egg-based main dishes.

Wholegrain fibrous carbohydrates
Foods such as brown rice, buckwheat and quinoa are bursting with B vitamins and have proven to help support hormonal balance. Quinoa helps keep female testosterone levelsbalanced and is packed with phosphorus and magnesium, both of which can alleviate PMS symptoms and promote sleep in women. Quinoa is based added to salads or used as a replacement for starchier carbs in main meals.

Leafy green foods
Leafy greens are loaded with antioxidants and are amazing for preventing inflammation. Greens such as spinach, kale, collard greens and Swiss chard are considered hormone-balancing and can reduce stress by lowering cortisol levels whilst helping to balance oestrogen.

The Kamalaya experts advise that in general women should eat plenty of good fats, a rainbow of vegetables and quality protein. We should also consider adopting our diets to our different life stages and differing changes and hormonal imbalances.
