FIVE NATURAL WAYS TO SUPPORT HORMONAL BALANCE

By Kamalaya’s Naturopath Kate Upton

Hormones are chemical messengers in the body that regulate many metabolic functions, and they play especially important role in women’s wellbeing. When they are in harmony, we feel in harmony with our body and mind.

At these stressful and uncertain times around the world, here are a few little steps you can take to help balance your hormones and to feel more centred:

Love your Liver

The liver clears excess oestrogen and testosterone from the blood, regulating the amounts in circulation. Support your liver by avoiding deep-fried foods and choosing foods with a bitter flavour such as watercress, mustard seeds, green tea and cranberries.

Balance your Blood Sugar

Blood glucose levels and hormonal balance are intimately linked. Cut right down on refined carbohydrates such as biscuits, chocolates and white bread and include a source of protein with every meal.

Avoid Hormone Disrupting Chemicals

Some chemicals in food and cosmetics are known as ‘endocrine disruptors’. Eat organic wherever possible, especially when consuming animal products. Avoid cosmetics that include phthalates and parabens.

Sunshine Vitamin

Vitamin D acts as a hormone itself, governing the metabolism of calcium. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked with low oestrogen and testosterone levels. In addition to exposure to sunlight, good sources of vitamin D include eggs, fish and cheese. Consider a blood test to see if supplementation is necessary.

Nature’s Pharmacy

Herbal medicine has been used for hundreds of years to support reproductive health. Examples include Shatavari and Vitex Agnus-Castus for women and Ashwagandha and Tribulus Terrestris for men. Herbal medicine can interact with pharmacological drugs you may be taking. Always work under the guidance of a qualified practitioner.
